Simple Dining Pleasures
Annette and I escaped to Las Vegas for a quick weekend vacation. We were able to score a free room at the Venetian (thanks to a combination of American Express and my son’s college tuition), so we relaxed in luxury for a good price. Now neither of us are gamblers, so instead of hitting the tables, we spent our money eating good food at quality restaurants. Luckily for us many of these mega resorts in Las Vegas have many fine restaurants so you do not have to venture out to enjoy your days and evenings.
For a late lunch, we headed to Mario Batali’s Enoteca San Marco. We had done this before. Get a bottle of wine, have the waiter select some cheese and carne and just taste and sip the remaining of the afternoon as we watch the other hotel visitors stroll the faux Piazza San Marco. There is nothing better than tasting quality food in a great (albeit) fake setting.
Later that evening, we headed to David Burke, a celebrity chef restaurant who is known for his creativity. You can see my review and others on my Yelp site. While the restaurant and food were nice, the simplicity of the offerings at Enoteca was all we could think about. We enjoyed it so much, even with all the other choices available to us, we headed back for dinner after a day of hiking. More wine, more cheese, more meat and this time suplemented with pasta. All consumed while time never changes in this fake piazza (its always early evening).
The style of food just reinforced my theory on cooking. Buy quality ingredients and do as little as possible and let the food speak for itself.
