If you didn’t know, I am somewhat of a closet weather buff. Ever since watching the TV channel at my grandparent’s house in Texas that would slowly pan back and forth between different weather dials, such as temp, wind speed, pressure and humidity, I have followed weather forecasts regularly. Today I use the local station at the school down the street, or other weather stations from Weather Underground to monitor local weather. Based on all this experience I am now ready to do my own seasonal forecasting. I can predict with reasonable accuracy that despite ongoing global warming the micro-climate in the central Orange County area will be unseasonable cool and below average temperatures.
I didn’t base this forecast on expected El Nino or La Nina activity, or low sea surface temperatures or cool water upwelling off the California coast, or rapid melting of Northern Hemisphere glaciers. My forecast is strictly based on the fact that after 21 years, Annette and I installed air conditioning in the house. Now with our luck, every spring and summer day will be cool and breezy and not require a single extra boost from our new high efficiency 5 ton AC unit. The day the unit became fully functional, it was a pleasant breezy day in the OC. But Annette and I felt compelled to chill the house down to sweater wearing temperatures so we can lavish in the power or our new purchase. We soon came to our senses, reset the thermostat to a normal temperature and opened some windows to let the nice ocean breeze invade the house. But its nice to know that when those sweltering nights do show up later this year, our house guests (you know who you are) and ourselves will appreciate that we can turn the power on and enjoy some better sleeping weather.
