One big whole in the ground

Last fall, Annette reminded me that she had never seen the Grand Canyon. That put me on a quest and I tried to find some time last fall to sneak off prior to our trip to New Zealand, but our schedule was full. After Christmas, I booked some rooms and planned a weekend. Our friends made a last minute decision to join us and so Friday afternoon we took off; spending the night in Kingman before heading off to the canyon the next day.

We got very lucky with the weather. Six inches of snow the week before we arrived made the Canyon views spectacular and also kept the number of people to a minimum. The weather while we were there was cold but sunny. I have lots of pictures on my Flickr site, but none seem to communicate the unbelievable size of the place. We had hoped to do some minor hiking down from the rim, but the trails were snow packed, and required special equipment to hike. We decided just to explore the rim and did enjoy sunrise at Mather Point before heading out of the east end on Sunday.

All four of us had cameras and after a while it seemed like a photo safari. I put my camera in my pocket and just enjoyed the view and later our drinks and dinner at the El Tovar Hotel.

The one draw back to the trip was the long drive home on Sunday. Luckily, it is pretty easy to spend 8 hours in a car as long as your passengers make good company. Annette and I paid for the trip with both of us exhausted the next day.

Would I do it again? Give me a month, and I will be ready for a new weekend adventure.
