Back from Down Under

We spent two weeks in New Zealand visiting my daughter, visiting some friends and taking the time to explore the South Island. First of all, it was wonderful to see my daughter who has been in New Zealand for 4 months and is planning to stay there for many more. This is the second time that we have traveled as a family around Christmas time. It makes for a very relaxing Christmas season and creates an easy way to enjoy family time. Nothing like driving 5 hours in a small car in a strange location to inspire family bonding. In future posts, I will describe some of our experiences, but first a general reaction. New Zealand is a spectacular place. It reminds me alot of California, just smaller more ocean and alot less people. Its got beaches, mountains, wine country, farm country, volcanos and earthquakes. In Southern California, you can go from beaches to snow in an hour and a half (unless traffic gets in the way, then it could take 4 hours). In New Zealand, you can do the same, but it may take a little longer as the roads are no bigger than many of California’s state highways, but traffic won’t slow you down, unless you get behind a tractor. My recommendation? Even if you don’t have friends or relatives to draw you down under, go see this place, it is incredible.
